Run a home project from the first plan to the last receipt

  1. Add your properties and projects

Add your main home, a cottage or cabin, a rental or a flip. Mark each project DIY, hired or mixed, so you know which parts you do on weekends and which parts you hire out.

  2. Plan the budget and the shopping list

Set a budget and a contingency share for each project. List the materials with their prices and see the total against the budget before you go to the store.

  3. Find a pro for the parts you hire out

Search the directory for an electrician, a plumber or a tiler near you, and call them directly or ask up to 3 pros at once. Save the pro to your contacts and link them to the phase they do.

  4. Log spending, receipts and photos as you go

Record every purchase and invoice against the budget. Keep a journal with photos of what you found behind the wall, so you can find it again next year.

Keep each project's money and progress in one place

In the 2026 Houzz & Home Study, 37% of renovation projects went over the planned cost, and a quarter of homeowners never set a specific budget (Stacker, read 2026-10-21).

Set the budget before you buy the first board, and see the gap while you can still change course.

  • Price the shopping list against the budget and mark each item when you order it.
  • Keep receipts and photos with the project they belong to.
  • Lay out the schedule, whether you work on weekends or a pro works on weekdays.
  • Run the workspace in US dollars, or in euros if you live in Finland.

Find local electricians, plumbers and other trades

Many projects need a pro for part of the work, even when you do the rest yourself. Search the directory by trade and by ZIP code, postal code or city, in the US and Finland.

Each profile lists the pro's trades, service areas, phone, email and website. Call or email the pro directly, or send a request from the profile.

  • Search for plumbing and heating, tiling and wet rooms, carpentry, roofing, heat pumps, chimney sweeps, sauna builders and more.
  • Save a pro to your household's contacts and set them as 'Done by' on the phase they do.
  • Ask up to 3 pros at once with Get bids, matched by your postal code and project type.

Track Finland's household tax credit as you go

Kotitalousvähennys gives you 40% of the labor cost of qualifying work in 2026 as a tax credit, up to 2,100 EUR per person, after an own share of 150 EUR. The Finnish Tax Administration raised these figures in October 2026 for costs paid from 1 January 2026. For 2025 the rate was 35% and the maximum 1,600 EUR.

Only labor counts, so Plankbook leaves materials out of the estimate. The company doing the work must be in the prepayment register, and work on a summer cottage you own and use qualifies.

Finnish pro profiles in the directory show the business ID (Y-tunnus) and whether the company is in the prepayment register, so you can check before you hire.
